The hammer tapping works!! Oh I am so happy to get that stuck filter out! After days of trying different methods-all of which took some time, in about 30 seconds the filter was free with about 3 smacks with the hammer. So glad I found this tip!!

Good job! Since the 3rd party filters may differ the jamming area may differ as well. I'll certainly keep your experience in mind should mine get stuck again. It sure beats breaking a part and having to order a replacement.

I found that using an off-brand filter was the problem. I had assumed that the issue was that the filter's latching mechanism was jammed but that wasn't it. The source of the problem was that the two nipples on the filter were oversized. When the filter had been shoved into the docking base six months ago, it got wedged in too tightly. Tthe filter just couldn't be pushed in any further which is why it couldn't unlatch.

What worked for me was to uninstall the docking base along with the stuck filter. Then I could drill down through the latching piece on the filter itself and break that piece off. After that, all I had to do is pry out the stuck filter and reinstall the docking base and covers.

You mean you struck it with a hammer on the cylinder end that faces outside the refrigerator; the side that I wrote the date on with a sharpie?
